Abstract

This work is a contemplative collection of histories surrounding the course of sugar in the human story. Though the selection for focus on particular episodes of history has been primarily subjective I have tried to keep a geographically balanced and even chronological composition paralleling the direction of sugar as a product, influence and catalyst of global culture and economics. I acknowledge and appreciate record of the refinement of sugar in Early China and the Far East however chose to involve them into the flow of the manuscript as part of an Old World/New World dynamic later in the timeline. The collection of poems arranges those poems relevant to sugar with others written during the course of the MA program.
