Abstract

Glass-forming ability and mechanical properties in the equivalent Zr 63-x -Alx-Cu24Ni10Co3 ternary phase diagram were investigated along the Cu24Ni 10Co3 isoconcentration line. An upper limit for bulk metallic glass formation of 16at.% Al was found. Higher Al concentrations resulted in a variable crystalline-amorphous phase fraction up to a crystalline phase fraction of 0.82 for 20 at.% Al. However, the ductility of the amorphous-crystalline phase mixtures was not improved because of the formation of a brittle intermetallic phase at the limit of glass formation. For the fully amorphous alloys, a monotonous increase in the glass-transition temperature, hardness, and Young's modulus as a function of the Al concentration was observed, indicating an increase in the bonding strength of the glassy phase up to the limit of bulk metallic glass formation. The values of the elastic moduli exhibited a pronounced deviation from a simple rule of mixing. The ratio of the shear to bulk modulus exhibited a pronounced minimum for a concentration of 13 at.% Al, showing that deformation properties such as plasticity may not be simply related to the bonding strength or unidirectional mechanical properties of the glassy phase. Further mechanical investigation of these glasses is underway.
