Abstract

A significant amount of reflection in Paul Valéry's Cahiers is devoted to the relationship between thought, perception, and the immediate physical realm around the writer. As part of the marginalia of genetic studies, this dialectical relationship within the context of perception and the genesis of writing constitutes an important dimension of the Cahiers through the way in which this visual immediacy informs the act of writing. The physical arrangement and disposition of the room, the system of contiguous space, and the constituent elements or 'accessories' populating the sphere of vision of the writing-self, form an intimate focal point where perception and consciousness converge with the mechanical scriptural act of writing.
