Abstract

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is an interactive learning process where participants are required to communicate and collaborate with each other to solve a set problem. Social Networking Software (SNS), a very topical phenomenon, has facilitated the communication and collaboration of users who share a common interest regardless of ethnic origin, age or geographical location. The merging of SNS with teaching and learning practises is an evolving area of pedagogical research. The results of an exploratory investigation with the documented group concluded that SNS can support the PBL process. It should be noted as a point of interest that participants received no guidance in relation to how they were to communicate and collaborate but they spontaneously adopted SNS as their primary method of collaborating around the PBL process outside of the tutorials.
