Abstract

It is now accepted that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the result of (photo)oxidative-induced retinal injury. However, the anatomic (central retinal), biochemical (antioxidant), and optical (short-wavelength-filtering) properties of the macular carotenoids suggest that these pigments may confer protection against AMD. Also, their optical (short-wavelength-filtering) properties suggest that they play a role in visual performance and experience.
