Abstract

It is well recognised that construction organizations rely on the knowledge of their staff to ensure project and organizational success. Knowledge management (KM) can enhance the effective sharing of knowledge throughout the organization, while continuing professional development (CPD) can improve the knowledge and skills of individual staff. Based on a continuing doctoral study, a case study survey of professional staff was undertaken within a leading Irish construction organization to evaluate their engagement with provided KM and CPD activities. These activities included internal seminars, training, mentoring, lessons learned and the identification and sharing of organizational knowledge. The case study found that staff value the provision of CPD activities highly, particularly as members of professional bodies. However, they struggle with the identification and sharing of knowledge throughout the organization. There appears to be merit in the integration of KM and CPD activities to promote a win-win situation in improving the knowledge of both the individual and the organization. The paper concludes by proposing a framework for integrating KM and CPD, considering the role of professional bodies in such activities.
